eBay selects Webcredible for online accessibility consultancy services

As part of its commitment to online accessibility, eBay UK has selected online usability and accessibility consultants, Webcredible, to provide training and process consultancy for accessibility services, as well as working on specific accessibility projects.

Pippa Gawley, Head of Site Experience, eBay, commented, “We have an extremely engaged and active community of buyers and sellers with a broad range of abilities, and recognise the need to maintain high levels of accessibility and compatibility for all our users.”

Independent figures, sourced by Webcredible, on the ecommerce market indicate that there are 8.6 million disabled people of working age in the UK, with an estimated combined spending power of up to £80 billion . Furthermore, research indicates that disabled users under 65 use the web as frequently as non-disabled users whilst those under 45 use the web more frequently .

Trenton Moss, director Webcredible concludes, “Accessibility does not always get the level of attention which it deserves from web developers and web managers. Often organisations feel that a one-time investment at the development stage of a website is enough. However, the web is a constantly changing and evolving entity. Organisations need to regularly re-evaluate their site to ensure that customers get a good user experience and that the site continues to meet legislative standards. It is extremely encouraging that a market leader in ecommerce such as eBay takes such a proactive and positive attitude towards online accessibility.”
