Mobile & handheld usability testing

Mobile phone usability testing lets you find out how easily people can achieve your goals for them whilst accessing your website through their mobile phones and PDAs. This will help you find ways to:

  • Improve the quality of your site visitors' experience
  • Increase online conversions (e.g. information discovery, sales enquiries)
  • Improve visitor-retention (i.e. repeat visits)

Webcredible carried out usability testing for us across two countries. It was an eye-opening experience, particularly being able to watch the testing live in Webcredible's usability lab. The way the tests were conducted was to the highest calibre.

Why does mobile phone usability testing matter?

Making sure your website is easy-to-use over a mobile phone is getting more important every year:

  • Over 94% of all 11-21 year olds in the UK have a mobile phone (source: MORI)
  • 40% of 11-21 year olds with a mobile phone use it to surf the Internet at least once a week (source: MORI)

An entire generation is growing up with a multi-modal attitude to information - they expect easy-access to your organisation on any device.

Deliverables from the mobile phone usability testing

Following the completion of the mobile phone usability testing you'll receive:

  • An oral presentation summarising the main points
  • A full report outlining the findings, both positive and negative, and offering specific recommendations for maximising the user experience on mobile phones and handheld devices

How we run the mobile phone usability testing

Participants are asked to complete tasks on your site using their mobile phone or PDA. Throughout the sessions an experienced Webcredible moderator will sit with each participant and prompt for feedback.

During the mobile phone usability testing, participants are instructed to think aloud at all times. By doing so, they'll be providing fascinating insights in to:

  • What they're looking at
  • What they're thinking about doing next
  • Whether the site is behaving as they expected

If participants fall silent for more than a few seconds they're gently encouraged to keep talking. Our moderators are expertly trained to ask questions and elicit thoughts in a non-biased and neutral manner. After the testing is carried out we conduct a brief interview with each user.

Before the mobile phone usability testing

Before the mobile phone usability testing is carried out, we'll work closely with you to analyse and identify:

  • Your organisation's goals for your website's mobile presence
  • Your site's different target audiences (and their goals for the site)
  • Which mobiles phones you should test with
  • Where and how the tests should be run

All of these will feed into a usability testing plan which will outline exactly what the testing sessions will involve and how they will be run.

We'll also run a pilot testing session to make sure that everything is in place for the full testing sessions. We'll recruit participants from your target audiences for the testing.
