Nothing - I'd phone them instead
It's the easiest thing to do when it comes to getting insurance. You can be as flexible as you like and speak to someone who can answer all of your questions.

Initial research of policies only
Insurance quotes involve so many variables and you can often get a better rate by changing one small detail. You can't easily do this online a lot of the time.

I always buy insurance through a broker. If I have a claim a nice person sorts it out for me - not a faceless uncaring call centre in Outer Mongolia!
Mike, Norfolk, UK
Talking to someone does make a difference - maybe they know more about the policy than the 'expert' system does.

I prefer to make my initial contact directly and keep my private information offline as much as possible.

Get a quote for a policy
I would stop shy of applying and/or paying for a policy. What if their records don't match my records as far as violations etc. This could make a drastic difference in cost.
Pete, Los Angeles, UK
Most insurance places just don't seem so well organised that I want to trust them with automation. I'm happy to use their sites for research, but I want to make sure I'm not going to accidentally end up without coverage while things transfer.

Apply for the policy (and pay offline)
Looking for a price online is easy, especially with comparison tools like confused.com. It's always best to try and haggle over the phone once you've got your quote as the insurance companies are eager to get your business so likely to give you a good offer!

Apply and pay online for a policy
I voted for apply and pay online because it's easier. You see in black in white what you're going to buy without the long sales pitch by the insurance agent.

Shopping and purchasing online from a reputable company is just as safe (or safer) than shopping offline. It's more convenient too.

Previous experience has shown that web-based quotes are cheaper than others, and do not rely on having the same conversation several-times over with different call handlers. Using form completion in web browsers means that details can be rapidly filled in.
Ian, Walsall, UK
It's so much easier if you don't have to talk to an agent - and less pressured. Also, you can compare policies side by side, rather than trying to remember who told you what about which policy.
Tanasha, Midlands, UK
I detest call centres, and am great at forgetting to send cheques. If I apply and pay online, it's done!
