Textual description of the missing ALT text
The comic strip is made up of three panes:
- “My screen reader's having trouble!” claims a distressed web user utilising a screen reader. There's a big question mark on his computer screen - what could be the problem? It must be missing ALT text! A JPEG image looks sad and sobs, “Without ALT text I'm useless and can't communicate at all”.
- Meanwhile, back at Webcredible HQ, our intrepid trio are monitoring the situation. Both Hyperlink and Dr Webcredible are on the phone, giving instructions to Webcrawler. “That's right, Webcrawler, assign the alternative text tag to that image!” the gang's leader, Dr Webcredible instructs. Armed with the ALT text, Webcrawler is poised to follow her orders.
- Now everyone is happy! Our JPEG image is smiling again, clutching on to the ALT text. Our screen reader user has exclaimed, “Great!” in his excitement. Dr Webcredible, always keen to lecture, sends out a stern reminder, “Remember to use ALT text on all images - this means your site will still be usable when images don't display!”
